Melasma is a tan or dark skin discoloration. Although it can affect anyone, melasma is common in women, especially pregnant women and those taking oral or patch contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy. Other rare causes include:

  • Pre-menopausal women due to enhanced surges in certain hormones
  • Women who live in regions with intense sun exposure
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Overproduction of melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) brought on by stress
